Annotate submissions

Claire breaks long-form text into smaller pieces called “Blocks”. Blocks make it faster and easier for you to highlight and annotate particular sections of the student's work.

How it works

  1. Navigate between Blocks: Use the and arrow keys on your keyboard to move between Blocks. The currently focused Block is indicated by a Focus Bar on the left side of the Block. The Focus Bar shows you where an annotation or comment will be added.

  2. Highlight Blocks: Claire uses a simple annotation system that enables you to quickly highlight passages of the student work to indicate Strengths or Weaknesses.

    • Press a to highlight a Block in green (indicating a strength)

    • Press d to highlight a Block in red (indicating a weakness or shortcoming)

    • Press s to highlight a Block in gray (neutral)

  3. Add Notes: Notes are a great way to add context to a highlight, for example, to explain why a Block is considered a strength or weakness of an assignment. There are two types of notes: Comments and Grading remarks. By default, every note is a Comment. Comments will be included only in the feedback report, while Grading remarks show up in both grading and feedback.

    • Press n to add a note (Comment) to a Block.

    • Link your note to a rubric criterion to transform it into a Grading remark.

For more details, read this article: Comments vs Grading remarks

  4. Approve AI Suggestions: Claire can also suggest grading remarks for you, indicated by a small green or red line above the Focus Bar, along with a dashed border around the Block in the corresponding color.

    • Use the / arrow keys to expand or collapse an AI suggestion. This will show you the reasoning of the AI and all Blocks the suggestion references.

    • Press Tab to approve an AI suggestion, which makes it part of your own annotations.

    • Press Backspace to reject (and hide) an AI suggestion permanently.

Alternatively, try out Rubric view to review suggestions: View remarks in Rubric view

Best practices

  • Add Comments to highlights to provide context and explain your reasoning, which helps the AI generate better feedback.

  • Review AI suggestions — they can catch details you might miss and save grading time.

  • Use Keyboard shortcuts for a faster, smoother annotation experience.
